Firstly I would like to apologise that I cannot bring you the usual match report. This is for a few reasons, one of which was being unable to keep my notepad dry! Photos were a struggle in the first half due to driving rain. Still, here is what I could cobble together...

Coe looks for a runner

The first half was a difficult affair for both teams. With the weather being more suited to Ark sailing, both sides struggled at times with a very slippery surface. I don't think they make studs long enough for what was needed yesterday! Shields started brightly and Chris Feasey tried to cause as much trouble as he could down the left flank. With Scroggins off getting married (has he never heard of close season? hehe) Jonny Wightman found himself in a more central midfield position. With Davy Graham also away at Scroggs matrimonial shenanigans, Shields played more of a 3-5-2 style formation.

Shields had the better of the early exchanges but Dunston became more prolific as the half progressed. Niki Lawson, making his debut after signing from Spennymoor Town, looked a little nervous perhaps in the first half, but grew in stature as the game progressed. It is never going to be easy to play in the first XI when yo haven't even trained with your team mates, nerermind play with them.

Dunston had a goal chalked late in the first half. It seemed uncertain why their effort was disallowed though pushing was a possible reason. It may have been a harsh decision but there have been a few of those gone against Shields this season. What goes around, comes around.

After the half-time sychronised swimming in the centre circle, something bizarre happened. The sun came out and the skies were blue again. Suddenly it was sunbathing weather after the monsoon in the first half. You have to love the North-East weather!

Tony Coe takes a clattering

The second half became a bit niggly at times. On a few occasions the Shields lads were clattered with clumsy challenges. It even triggered a round of "handbags at ten paces" at one point. Shields finally broke the deadlock after some more fantastic work by Chris Feasey. He weaved his way in to the area and fired a ball across the face of the six yard area. Dunston's Lee Bell instinctively went to clear the ball but instead sent the ball past his 'keeper and in to the net. His shin seemed to be the culprit. What a great shin!

At that point it was probably a fair scoreline. However, Dunston then applied a prolonged period of pressure. It was a case of all hands on deck for the Mariners and they all responded brilliantly. Every one of the Shields players dug deep and got stuck in. Niki Lawson made a couple of great saves to keep the score 1-0. Although there is no way to be certain after only one game, it does look as if he is going to be a useful acquisition. There is some serious competition for the number 1 jersey.

Shields soaked up the pressure and broke on the counter-attack on a number of occasions. A few decent moves were created but Liam Connell in the visitors goal didn't have to make too many saves.

The game petered out over the last 10 minutes with both sides cancelling each other out. Thankfully there were no red cards to spoil the day and Shields went off at full-time with three more points in their pockets.

I would like to take this opportunity to highlight just how far South Shields have progressed this season compared to 2008/09. At present South Shields are only nine points short of last seasons tally of 37 points. There are still 25 games remaining this season. Last season saw only nine victories, this was equalled yesterday. Last season saw only four victories away from home. This season the lads have notched up five victories already. They still have to play eight games against the current bottom five teams. You would hope that there will be a good number of points collected from those matches.

So you see, it is a great time for us Mariners supporters. With our continued support it can get even better. The club are still looking to strengthen the squad and the Supporters Association are always looking at ways to spread the word. More people through the gate means more funds. More funds means more improvements on the pitch. This means more people through the gate. So spread the word and let us get Filtrona rocking!! Up the Mariners!!

The new and shiny setting of Frenchfield Park saw The Mariners take on Penrith AFC. The hosts new home was impressive and the travelling supporters were made to feel very welcome. The sun was shining and conditions were pretty much perfect. A close battle was expected. Shields were hoping to prove they were better than the last three of results depicted. Penrith were hoping to show that their only home defeat a few days earlier was nothing more than a blip.

The first attempt in anger came from Ellison after 6 minutes. He found himself with a little space on the edge of the area but steered his shoot just wide of the right hand post.

Five minutes later Shields were put under pressure. Penrith had managed to get the ball in to the box where it was pinged back and forth. Eventually Penrith managed to poke a shot towards the goal but Tony Coe was on hand to stab it clear. Penrith pumped the ball back in to the area but it rolled harmlessly wide of the post.

Four minutes later Coe was up the other end of the pitch and providing a decent cross in to the area. Jonny Wightman managed to connect but his effort went wide.

A minute later and Scroggins ended up in the referee’s notebook for a foul. It may have been a bit harsh but judging by this season’s standards of officiating it was at least consistent.

A very tight period of play followed with both sides cancelling each other out. Penrith had a little more possession but couldn’t get through the Shields rearguard. It was starting to look as if this game would be decided by either a moment of genius or an error of judgement.

In the 28th minute, Tony Stephenson found himself out on the left. He made himself a bit of space and whipped the ball in to the Penrith 18-yard box. Ramsey connected with his head but couldn’t direct his effort down and the ball cleared the crossbar.

Five minutes later Chris Feasey played the ball in to the area but Penrith managed to react first and half-cleared the danger. Shields got the ball back on to the edge of the penalty area and Ramsey let rip but the shot went straight down Wills’ throat in the home side’s goal. If it had only been a few feet either side it would have certainly beat the keeper. The ball was cleared but was immediately returned in to the Penrith box where Wightman had a crack from 15 yards out. Unfortunately he didn’t catch the ball sweetly and the shot flew wide of the post.

In the 38th minute Feasey provided another testing cross in to the area. Scroggins tried to connect with an overhead kick but it didn’t trouble Wills in the Penrith goal.

With three minutes remaining in the first half Penrith’s Graham Anthony found himself with the ball on the edge of the Shields box. He cracked a shot at goal but Clark dived to his right and made a great save to deny him a goal. It would have been a cruel time to concede, and also against the run of play.

The referee blew the half time whistle and both teams headed back to the changing rooms for a pep talk. I decided it was a good time to carry out my civic duty and head towards the refreshment stand. Several of the South Shields FC Pie Fanciers Club were unable to attend this fixture so I felt it was my job, even duty, to report back on the standard of the pies at Frenchfield Park.

I opted for the mince and potato pie though a Cornish pie was also on offer. At £1.40 it was a fair price in comparison to other grounds. The pie was served at a nice temperature and came with a plastic fork jabbed in to the top. After removing the fork I got stuck in. The pastry was nice, not too thick or stodgy. The potato had settled towards the bottom of the pie but this didn’t detract too much from the overall flavour. The filling was quite peppery which I enjoyed but this may not be to everyone’s tastes. Taking that in to consideration I rate this pie 7½ out of 10. I hope this proves helpful.

The start of the second half was a close affair with both sides keeping things tight. It was the 52nd minute before either side had a chance on goal. Tony Coe played the ball in to the box and in the following scramble Stephen Ramsey got his foot to the ball but his effort was deflected and went out for a corner.

Four minutes later Captain Scroggins found himself in the box and got his head to a cross only to see the ball loop over the bar.

A minute later Penrith’s Will Paul broke in to the Shields penalty area. From 12 yards out he thumped his effort towards goal but he steered it wide of the left hand post. This was a little reminder to the Shields defence to keep switched on as Penrith still believed they could break the deadlock.

Soon after the home side’s effort, Davy Graham decided to have a go from long range. He has hit a couple of cracking goals this season from distance and tried his luck from 30 yards. His attempt was well struck and on target. Wills threw himself to his left and made the save.

The next couple of minutes saw some odd things happening. After a bit of handbags between a couple of players from both sides, the referee decided to brandish the yellow card to a couple of players; one for each side. This saw the Penrith boss get a bit upset. After being told to be quiet and sit down he took his anger out on the dugout. The referee, Mr Kettlewell, returned to the touchline to send the boss to the stands.

Penrith played a decent cross in to the area a few minutes after the incident. Craig Ellison was alert and got his boot to the ball before the home side’s strikers could react and cleared the danger. Ellison never stopped running all game and credit must go to him for his efforts.

Two minutes later and Shields were under pressure again. Will Paul struck a decent shot which was blocked and after a bit of frantic defending the visitors finally cleared their lines and relieved the pressure. Penrith were starting to take the upper hand. For ten minutes the hosts put Shields well and truly under the cosh.

Shields responded to this and started to make life difficult for Penrith again.
In the 74th minute the breakthrough came. Stephen Ramsey, who was industrious all game, bagged himself a well deserved goal. The ball had been played back to Wills in the Penrith goal. He was on the edge of the area when Ramsey bore down on him. The pressure certainly worked as the keeper suddenly became caught in two minds as to what to do next. Ramsey stole the ball from him and took it around him. This was still a long way from being a goal. Keeping calm as the keeper threw himself at the ball, Ramsey stroked the ball towards goal, managing to keep it far enough from the sprawling Wills’ outstretched hands. As the ball rolled towards the empty net the Shields fans behind the goal were jubilant and Ramsey wheeled away in delight. Penrith 0 South Shields 1.

Over the next ten minutes the game became a battle with neither side getting much time on the ball. Chris Feasey and Tony Coe made way for Anth Robson and Hal Graham respectively.

Ten minutes from time Andy Clark pulled off a save that Bruce Grobbelaar would have been proud of. Craig Wilson cut in from the right and as he reached the edge of the area let rip. Clark pulled off a fantastic save to deny Wilson and keep the score 1-0.

With six minutes remaining Craig Ellison struck a good effort which narrowly cleared the top right hand corner of the Penrith goal.

Two minutes from time Tony Stephenson receiving his marching orders from Mr Kettlewell. A clumsy challenge was made by Grant Davidson which saw him falling on top of the South Shields number 9. As Davidson slowly got to his feet Stephenson pushed at him; partly in distress as his shoulder had took a jarring and partly in retaliation. The referee swiftly produced a straight red card for what was deemed to be violent behaviour it would seem. It cannot be denied that Stephenson retaliated, albeit in a fairly innocuous fashion. You could argue that a yellow may have been deserved. A three match ban now awaits him.

In the first minute of injury time Penrith had one last throw of the dice. Will Paul, arguably their most dangerous player, thumped the ball towards the Shields goal. Clark was on his mettle and pulled out another great save. He got his fist to the ball and punched it just wide of the left hand upright. This lad had most definitely had three Shredded Wheat! This proved to be the last chance of the game.

As both sides left the pitch an appreciate crowd of 144 gave them a warm round of applause. The following Shields supporters cheered off their lads knowing they gave a great performance and were taking three points back over to South Tyneside. In a game between two fairly balanced sides it was South Shields who worked that bit harder, fought harder and possibly believed in themselves a little more. The net result was a win and a happy trip back over the Pennines. Happy days!

I left Bridlington on Saturday feeling really disappointed. I don't mind losing to a better team. I don't expect us to win every game. I don't expect flawless performance. All I ever ask is that a man gives his very best. No man can perform better than his ability level dictates, so give us your best effort, and we will appreciate and respect it. We lost at Bedlington and I (and I believe most fans) came away disappointed to lose, but proud of the performance. When we lost at Bridlington My overall feeling was frustration and disappointment.

I don't want to be too hard on the lads. I thought each and every one of them worked as hard as they could. In difficult conditions they ran and sweated for the cause, and were beaten by a team who looked no better than them, no better that Norton. The difference seemed pyschological to me. They looked like they believed in themselves and trusted in their own belief, and I'm not sure we did.

Too often we just don't perform to our best in these big games and I was beginning to wonder if we are beaten mentally before we even show up. Shields players have showed grit and determination, character and ability all season, and on Saturday it went for a walk. The effort and work ethic was all we kept hold of.

We need to address this. Tactics and techniques can be coached into players and teams. Attitudes also need to be improved. We need to work on these young lads, and they are a relatively young team. Work on them to be able to believe in themselves, to trust in themselves and their team mates. Trust in their own ability, so in the big games they use that ability, rather than panic and resort to long ball football and hope things drop right.

I think we have in this group of players the nucleus of a very good team. Tweaking is all that is needed as long as the attitude, the belief, the confidence grows with the experience.

I'm disappointed, with the performance. I'm disappointed for them, but I'm in no means disappointed by them.

We move on now, together. And together we'll move on, and together we'll succeed

A lovely sunny day, if not a tad breezy, at Welfare Park saw South Shields take on the useful Bedlington Terriers. Both sides are at the right end of the table and a close encounter was to be expected. Plenty of supporters had made the trip up north to cheer on the Mariners as they looked for another good result on the Terriers’ famous sloping pitch.

Whilst the bait hut was a little on the expensive side (£1 for a Bovril!) it was apparent that the quality of pie available was good enough for the followers of Shields.

The first ten minutes or so was played at a decent tempo without producing much in the way of a threat to either goal. Both teams were trying to pass it around but both sides were also very quick in to the tackle. As pressure was applied by both sides, it was Shields who notched up the first serious threat to break the deadlock. In the 14^th minute Scroggins found himself on the right flank and played a good ball in to the area. Tony Coe leaped to meet it but his header was directed just wide of the right hand post.

Three minutes later Tony Stephenson provided a lovely pass in to the area, picking out Jonny Wightman. As Wightman went to connect with the ball it bobbled up at him and his well struck effort went wide of the upright.

After twenty minutes it was 1-0 to the Terriers. With their first meaningful attack Anthony Shandran found himself in acres of space. He ran towards goal, heading towards the left hand side of the penalty area. Andy Clark came streaking out of the Shields goal like a greyhound with a firework up its backside and Shandran calmly lobbed him to give the Terriers the lead. The tannoy immediately blared out “Who let the dogs out” as Shields looked annoyed that they had given away such a soft goal.

26 minutes played and Shields had another chance on goal. A long ball had been played in to the area and Wightman out jumped his marker. Unfortunately he didn’t connect with any real power and his effort dropped tamely in to the arms of Newton in the Bedlington goal.

A minute later Wightman tried again to grab an equaliser. However his shot lacked power and again Newton made an easy save.

In the 34^th minute Shields had another crack at goal. Stephenson got himself in to a great position and met a lovely cross from Ellison with his head. As the ball headed towards the back of the net, Newton pulled off a good save and palmed the ball around the right hand post. Shields were the more dominant side with plenty of possession but they were finding it tough to make the breakthrough.

A few minutes later and the Mariners had a couple of corners in quick succession. In both cases the ball pinged around the box with a couple of effort being directed at goal. But a mixture of dogged defending and good goalkeeping saw the ball eventually cleared out of the danger zone.

Five minutes before half-time saw Tony Stephenson get his head to another cross but he couldn’t keep his effort down and the ball sailed over the bar.

Three minutes later and Ellison tried his luck. He found himself with a bit of space so he advanced forward towards the right hand corner of the 18 yard box. He fired one in at goal but the keeper had read the situation well and had positioned himself to collect the ball comfortably.

Just before the whistle blew Craig Armstrong found himself in a similar position to Ellison and also took a crack at goal. Once again Newton had seen the danger and got down to make the save at his near post.

Half-time saw the Terriers lead by one goal to nil. They were rarely a threat yet held the advantage. Surely the second half would see a turnaround of fortunes. The Mariners would be playing against the breeze in the second half.

The second half began with the Terriers showing more spirit and application than in the first 45 minutes. Two minutes after the restart saw Steven Shaw get his head to a good cross. From the penalty spot he placed his header wide of the post. This was a bit of a wakeup call to the away side.

Three minutes later saw Scroggins pick up another yellow card for a strong but arguably fair challenge. From the resulting free-kick in the centre of the pitch Bedlington tried to double their lead. The ball came to goal scorer Shandran on the edge of the area. His effort was harmless and went wide of the post.

A minute later Ellison was trying his luck again. Once more he found himself with space to run in to with the ball at his feet. As he approached the edge of the area he struck a firm shot at the Bedlington goal. Newton pulled off another good save and parried Sid’s shot around the right hand upright. It was starting to look like it would be one of those days.

With 57 minutes on the clock, Craig Armstrong pulled the trigger from the edge of the area but his shot went straight to the keeper.

After just over an hour Shields thought they had grabbed an equaliser. Tony Stephenson fired in a tremendous shot at goal. Newton once again pulled off a cracking save and palmed the ball away. It rolled across the face of the goal and just wide of the right hand upright. The home side were certainly thankful of the heroics their keeper was producing. From the resulting corner the ball once again bobbled about in the area like a pinball machine. Try as they might, nobody in the claret and blue could poke it past the Bedlington keeper.

In the 65^th minute Bedlington struck a hammer blow. The referee pointed to the spot after Davy Graham was judged to have handled the ball. It seemed a little harsh but I am sure if the roles were reversed I would have been shouting for Shields to get a penalty! Shandran claimed the responsibility to take the kick and slotted it in to the bottom right hand corner as Clark dived the other way. Somehow Bedlington were two goals up and the supporters simultaneously scratched their heads in bemusement.

Shields then hit back in the best way possible. From the restart Captain Scroggins surged forward and struck a fantastic effort which beat Newton all ways up in the Terriers goal. As the ball rattled the net the players and fans celebrated a thoroughly deserved and brilliantly taken goal. The fans behind the goal hit back at the home support with a rousing chorus of “Who let the Scroggs out”. Quality supporters at Shields ya knaa!

After the goal was a period of “up yer bum football” *. Shields were starting to set up camp in the Bedlington half. The back four were at times holding their line only a few feet inside the halfway line. With eleven minutes left to play, Shields missed a glorious opportunity to pull level. After some great play Michael Rodenby found himself free six yards from goal. With the keeper out of position he struck the ball on the volley. Unfortunately he got too far under the ball and his effort cleared the bar. Bedlington were now living a very charmed life indeed.

In the 82^nd minute the home side made a break up field. The ball landed at the feet of Shandran, on the lookout for a hat-trick. He hit a good effort towards goal but Clark pulled off and excellent save with his legs to nullify the danger and keep Shields in the game.

With five minutes to play Chris Feasey replaced Craig Armstrong. Soon after the substitution Shields went close again. A great cross from Richard Paxton was equalled by a great leap from Scroggins. Although the header had power, it went just the wrong side of the post and Bedlington were still in front.

Coe never stopped running and was always looking for the ball

Despite lots of effort the Mariners couldn’t fashion another chance at goal and the whistle blew to end the match. Bedlington had successfully managed a smash and grab and took all three points from a largely one-sided game. As Terriers fan “Neil” stated on the Non-league Zone forum, “Delighted with the three points today but we were very fortunate after Shields played us off the park at times”. Sometimes you get these days and you just have to grin and bear it.

Great credit must go to the team as they battled hard for the full ninety minutes without their just reward. Another day would have seen a healthy three or more goal victory. These things have a habit of balancing themselves out and no doubt Shields will claim three points against the run of play before the season ends. Credit must also go to the large number of travelling supporters. One of the Bedlington staff commented on how impressed they were with the turnout.

So Tuesday night sees us back at Welfare Park as this time we take on Morpeth. They recorded their first points of the season winning 3-0 away at West Auckland on Saturday. Not sure if you can read much in to that though as West Auckland have only amassed one point in nine games. Morpeth are there for the taking and if the lads convert a third of the chances they made for themselves today, it might be a cricket score! Onwards and upwards!

* - No I don't know what it means either but Stuart Hall said it on Radio 5 Live when reporting on the Blackburn v Aston Villa game on Saturday and it cracked me up!

On what became a chilly evening in South Shields, the Mariners took on Norton & Stockton Ancient. Shields were coming in to this game in good form after disposing of Pontefract Collieries 5-0 at the weekend.

It only took a few minutes for the first signs of goalmouth action. Tony Stephenson bought himself a bit of space to allow him to cross a great ball in to the area. Tony Coe sprinted in to the box from the midfield but couldn’t quite make up the ground required to get himself on to the end of it.

A minute later Norton & Stockton thought they would throw their hat in to the ring. Michael Dunwell got his head to a decent ball and his powerful header went just wide of the left hand post.

In the 10^th minute Shields took the lead. Armstrong was cynically fouled in the area as he made an attempt towards the goal. N&S were somewhat fortunate not to lose a player as the foul was committed by their last man. Captain Scroggins plonked the ball on the penalty spot and confidently stroked the ball home past Briggs in the visitor’s goal. As the ball nestled in to the bottom right hand corner the Shields players wheeled away in celebration.

After a quarter of an hour N&S tried to pull level. The ball fell at the feet of Nathan Mulligan who struck a decent shot towards the Shields goal. The ball took a deflection and went wide of the post. The corner which followed is easily dealt with and the danger was cleared.

24 minutes gone and N&S almost gave Shields a two goal lead. Tony Coe whipped in a good cross and Dale Mulligan went to head the ball behind for a corner. However he didn’t quite get his angles right and put the ball perilously close to the back of his own net, only just going around the outside of the right hand upright.

Five minutes later Scroggins got his head to a cross but saw his header loop straight in to the arms of the Norton & Stockton keeper. Four minutes later was a repeat performance as a similar cross met the same head and once again dropped in to the gloves of Briggs.

In the 39^th minute the visitors pulled level. A poor headed clearance by Oates kept the home side under pressure. As the ball bounced around the area it was Richard Storr who took advantage and poked it home and make the score 1-1.

Paxton got a bit pushy in the box

As half time approached Shields shot themselves in the foot. A push by Richard Paxton on Richard Storr in the area saw the referee pointing to the spot. Michael Dunwell stepped forward to take the spot-kick and drilled it down the middle as Clark took a dive to his right. Dunwell had lived up to his name and the visitors went in at half time leading 2-1. The supporters were shocked to be losing after a first half where Shields were the more dominant side.

Shields were going to have to take the game to Norton & Stockton if they were going to overturn their lead.

Tony Coe didn't stop running all night

The second half started with both teams showing a lot of hustle and bustle. However it was the visitors who took advantage when the defensive line was breached. David Wells had sprung the Shields offside trap and found himself in acres of space with only the keeper to beat. Clark advanced from his goal but couldn’t close down the space quick enough as Wells easily put the ball past him to give the Ancients a 3-1 lead. The supporters were stunned and the Mariners looked perplexed.

It would have been easy for heads to drop and for confidence to fall away after the third goal. The Shields lads decided to stand up be counted…

Scroggins found his way in to the referee’s little black book a few minutes before a Shields substitution. Feasey came on to replace Ellison. The effect was immediate. Some good play saw Wightman break free down the right wing. He played a good ball in to the area for Tony Stephenson. He couldn’t quite control it and after a scrap the ball was cleared but only as far Tony Coe. He once again whipped in a cross from the right and Craig Armstrong planted himself before guiding a very beautifully placed header past Briggs to make it 2-3. With twenty five minutes remaining there was time to get another goal. The fans believed, but more importantly the players believed.

In the 71^st minute Tony Stephenson found himself being booked for his behaviour. He foolishly threw the ball towards one of the Norton players, more out of frustration than anything else. However it was only ever going to end up with a yellow card being brandished.

The home side continued to push forward in search of an Edward. Edward Woodward? The Equaliser? The older ones will get it but probably will groan with disappointment at such a poor joke.

Davey Graham hits a stunner to make it 3-3!

With twelve minutes remaining Shields were awarded a free-kick about 30 yards from goal towards the left hand side of the N&S box. As expected David Graham fancied a crack from that sort of range. And were South Shields pleased he did! He struck a ferocious effort with accuracy which sailed in to the top left of the visitor’s goal. Briggs was a mere spectator in the visitor’s goal as he saw the ball fly past him. The home side celebrated with a very happy Graham and the crowd believed a winner was possible.

Shields kept pressing forward in search of a winner. A number of half chances were created, the best of which fell to Craig Armstrong five minutes from time. His long range effort was well struck but went harmlessly wide of the post. A few crosses were thrown in to the box with one or two headers either being saved or going over the bar.

Coe makes a great run

The referee added several minutes of stoppage time due to two injuries but shields could not find their way through the Ancients defence. The full-time whistle blew to the relief of Norton & Stockton and the Mariners shared the points. A 3-3 thriller which saw the game flip one way, then the other and back again meant the decent sized crowd had been suitably entertained.

Saturday sees Shields take a trip to Terrier country as the head north to Bedlington. It will be another stern test and hopefully Shields will show the same application shown against N&S.

After three consecutive victories, Shields travelled to Billingham Synthonia hoping to stretch their run to four. A close match was predicted by many and it lived up to expectations. In glorious sunshine the game got under way...

As the crowd topped up their tans, several chose to top up their stomachs. For some reason there was a sea of claret and blue outside of the bait hut.

As the Mariners faithful got stuck in to their food, both teams were battling it out on the pitch. For the first quarter of an hour there was very little in the way of goal mouth action. However there was plenty of application on display. Both teams were trying to stamp their authority on the game.

Some nice little moves were being put together but some tough tackling from both sides meant there was very little threat on either goal. The first real effort came in the 15th minute.

Jameson found himself with a little bit of space and tried his luck with a longe range effort. However the shot was straight down Clark's throat and he easily saved.

This would have been a great shot of Ramsey scoring his first, but the bloody referee's assistant got in the way!

Shields struck a blow after 18 minutes. Ramsey, who regualrly pestered the Synthonia defence, put pressure on the Synners defence. Two of the defenders were caught in two minds with each other so Ramma decided to take advantage . He stole the ball away and raced in to the box. The keeper came out to close Ramsey down but he kept his calm and stuck the ball in to the back of the net. A well taken effort for a player who definitely deserved his goal.

After 24 minutes Billingham applied a little pressure on the Shields goal. An effort had been punched clear by Clark but the ball fell at the feet of Harbron who shot over the bar.

In the 28th minute a panic set in as Dixon in the Billingham goal committed a bit of a howler. He fumbled the ball when under a bit of pressure from Ramsey. The ball went out for a corner to the Mariners. A lovely ball was played in to the area and Paxton thumped an effort towards goal. It ricocheted off the right hand post and the loose ball was played back in towards the six yard box. Ramsey was on hand to steer the ball past the keeper and players on the line to find the back of the net. Shields found themselves two up and were looking good.

Two minutes after the second goal Ellison tried his luck. He surged through the midfield on a determined run and struck a fair effort from 20 yards. The Synners keeper followed the ball and made a comfortable save.

Nine minutes before half-time Ramsey was causing more mischief. Ramsey stormed in to the box and Dixon came out of his goal to close him down. Ramsey's shot hit the keeper and fell to Stephenson. With the goal at his mercy he somehow pushed his shot wide of the right hand upright. So nearly 3-0... but it was not to be.

On 39 minutes Billingham tried to remind the visitors that they were still a force to be reckoned with. They were awarded a free-kick 25 yards from the Shields goal. Yale cracked an effort but it was always going wide of the post.

The referee blew his whistle to signify the end of the first half. The large contigent of Shields supporters were very happy with a two goal lead. Everyone expected the home side to try and make a bigger impact in the second half. How right they were...

A whole-hearted challenge if ever there was one

Five minutes in to the second half Billingham started to apply some pressure. Iley, a second half substitute, went on a good run down the right flank and played a good ball in to the box. Yale tried to get his shot on goal but Hal Graham had other ideas and got in the way and the ball went out for a corner. Soon after the corner Iley was at it again. He played a lovely ball across the Shields six yard box but the Synners had nobody following up and the ball was cleared upfield.

Scroggins picked up a yellow card on the hour and two Shields substitutions soon followed. Wightman came on for Stephenson and Coe replaced Feasey.

A couple of minutes later Davey Graham found his way in to the referee's notebook for a late challenge. This was a sign of the frustration that was starting to build as Shields found themselves being pressed back in to their own half. The back four were falling further back and the midfield were sitting right in front of them. Billingham were having a lot of the ball and were trying to turn the screw. The Mariners were soaking it up but were struggling to put a series of passes together.

With twenty minutes remaining Billingham were awarded a penalty. Oates lunged in late and brought down his man. The referee blew and pointed to the spot. Oates really could have no complaints and received a yellow card for his troubles. Yale stepped up and stroked the ball home, sending Clark the wrong way. Synthonia had a foothold in the game again and wanted a second.

Shields picked up another booking on 73 minutes with Paxton being penalised for holding. The visitors then took off Rodenby and replaced him with Anthony Robson.

In the 79th minute Iley played in a great cross towards the head of Magowan. He met the cross well but sent his header over the bar. Shields went back up the other end of the pitch and Tony Coe saw his long range effort go high, wide and not so handsome.

Despite the tense nature of the game, Davey Graham finds time to amuse the crowd by giving Billingham's Iley a wedgie!

Shields were getting themselves back in to the game in the last fifteen minutes as they tried to defend by attacking. With four minutes left Davey Graham tried one of his trademark long range missiles but he didn't quite connect and the keeper had an easy save to make.

With a minute to go Ramsey almost made it a hat-trick when he got his head to a corner but his effort went just wide of the right hand post. Ramsey was also involved in a scuffle as Billingham's Shaw swung an elbow out as they were both on the ground following a tackle. He also pushed Ramma as they were on the ground. The referee showed Shaw a yellow card for his behaviour. On another day the card may have been red. Ramsey did well not to retaliate, although Justin Perry wasn't quite so laid back and was rather upset at Shaw's attitude.

The final seconds ticked by and the final whistle blew. South Shields had notched up their fourth consecutive league win. Last season it took til the last day of January to reach nineteen points. As of the 12th September eighteen points are on the board. It is a good time to be a follower of the claret and blue...

On an evening that showed the first signs of autumn, South Shields took on Ryton at the unusually landscaped Kingsley Park. Shields were hoping to make it a hat-trick of wins, Ryton were hoping to record their first home points of the season.

Feasey jinks one way then the other

The first half took a little while to spark in to any kind of life. This was in part to a rather strong blustery wind whirling around the ground. The first fifteen minutes were pretty scrappy but then Shields had their first attempt at goal. Chris Feasey had received the ball out wide and took on his man. He cut inside and drove towards the box with his marker in close proximity. He struck the ball from about 12 yards out only to see the keeper save with his legs.

Five minutes later Ryton had their first meaningful attack of the match. Patton found himself heading towards the line when he fired one in from a tight angle. Clark was ideally situated and saved with his feet as the ball was drilled in at him.

In the next minute Ryton almost gifted Shields a goal. Feasey had slung in a deep cross which looked to be fairly comfortable for Davison in the Ryton goal. However he dropped the cross and frantically dived to collect the spilled ball despite great pressure from Ramsey.

32 minutes played and Feasey found some space on the left flank and fired in a cross-cum-shot which cleared the crossbar. The conditions were making it tough for both teams. The blustery wind made anything aerial a case of pot luck as there was no real way of knowing where it would end up. And playing it along the deck was tricky due to the pitch suffering from what can best be described as “undulating”.

Four minutes from half time saw Davey Graham try his luck with a long range free-kick. He struck it well but it cleared the crossbar by a few inches. The home side then advanced up the pitch and had an effort at goal. Fortunately the shot wasn’t well struck and it headed straight to Clark who comfortably collected it.

A minute later Ramsey had a crack at goal. He was 20 yards out but that didn’t stop him from wrapping his foot around the ball and lashing it towards the Ryton goal. The ball travelled with pace but just went wide of the left hand upright. Shields were inching further towards getting a goal.

The half-time whistle blew and the Shields faithful trooped away to warm themselves with pies, Bovril, chips, hot dogs, a swift pint and pies. The chilly wind was causing a few rosy cheeks and numb toes! Time to start getting the woolly hat and gloves out me thinks.

Shields started the second half brightly. With the wind becoming a little less problematic it was hoped we would see more chances. It didn’t take long. Soon after the restart Feasey was at it again. Once again he attacked the Ryton goal from the left wing and saw his shot deflected for a corner.

In the 58^th minute Feasey was having another pop. Once again he cut in from the wing and forced his marker back towards the goal. Again he sweetly struck the ball but Davison was equal to it and pushed his shot away. Feasey was having a good game… and it was about to get better.

A minute later Craig Armstrong received the ball about 10 yards in to the Ryton half. He used his pace to get away from the defence and was bearing down on Davison between the sticks. A mixture of Armstrong trying to create an angle and the keeper trying to make it hard for him saw him heading in to the box but away from the left hand post. Armstrong took his chance and struck one towards the goal. The Ryton keeper flung himself to the ground to palm the shot away. The ball then fell to Feasey who kept a calm head and clinically stroked the ball in to the empty net.

The crowd behind the goal erupted in jubilation and Feasey himself seemed to enjoy the goal, celebrating with the travelling supporters and generally looking ecstatic! It was great to see and he thoroughly deserved his goal. Ryton 0 South Shields 1.

Two minutes later and that man Feasey was trying to double his tally. He hit a good shot which the keeper managed to save and the ball went behind for a corner. A ball was launched in to the box from the corner flag and Davey Graham tried his luck but his left footed effort was saved by Davison.

A minute later and Shields were in rampant mood. This time Ramsey, who gave yet another committed and consistent display, let one rip from about 20 yards. His shot just missed the right hand post by a couple of inches but the referee blew for an infringement. He felt Ramma had handled the ball just before his shot.

I must add that the standard of officiating was much improved in this game. Thankfully no cards were shown and most of the decisions were spot on for both teams. It benefits the game when it is well run by the referee and his assistants. It also benefits the players when they see fairness, understanding and consistency.

Stephenson was always looking to receive the ball

In the 64^th minute Ryton reminded Shields that they were still in the game as long as it remained 1-0. Allsopp had an effort at goal but it was an easy save for Clark. One of the reasons Ryton struggled up front was the performance of the Shields defence. They rarely gave the home side a sniff and stayed strong and organised. They kept calm when under pressure and helped to feed the midfield well.

With fifteen minutes remaining Shields took off Hal Graham and brought on Craig Ellison. A couple of minutes later Tony Stephenson made way for Tony Coe. Stephenson had put in another good shift and is looking like a good acquisition.

In between these substitutions Ramsey had another great effort at goal. He climbed high to get his head to a well weighted cross and thumped it towards the Ryton net. However they had a man ideally placed on the line who headed his effort clear. From my position it was oh so nearly a goal as about half of the ball had crossed the line before being headed clear. From the clearance Davey Graham tried his luck again but the Ryton keeper made the save.

As the game headed towards the final five minutes, goal scorer Chris Feasey was replaced by Anthony Robson. Ryton now looked consigned to defeat.

With four minutes left Shields wrapped up the game and all three points. Tony Coe found himself free in the area with the ball at his feet. He was about 12 yards out and wide of the left hand upright with the keeper approaching trying to close down the angles. With great coolness under pressure from the advancing Davison, Coe sweetly struck a curling shot towards the top right hand corner of the net. The strike was inch perfect and the ball rattled the netting. It was a fabulous goal which sent the away supporters crazy and saw Shields take a two goal lead.

There was a decent crowd in attendance, and at least half of them must have been from sunny South Shields. A credit to the club I reckon!

The last few minutes were played out without incident and the Mariners left Ryton Hills with three points in their back pocket. This was a great all-round team performance played by a side with increasing confidence. It was always going to be a tough test to take something away from this game. A point would have been most welcomed. Three is fantastic!

Next stop is the re-arranged fixture away at Billingham Synthonia. They have taken eight points from five games and drew 2-2 with Esh Winning on Tuesday night. It will be a tough game for South Shields but it is a one than can be won. The performance against Ryton on a difficult pitch proves it can be done… and I am sure the players and management will be up for the challenge.

Tow Law Town were the opposition at Filtrona Park on this typical British summer day (wind, sun, rain etc.). Both sides seemed fairly equal so a close game was expected. South Shields were showing signs of getting back to full strength as they named possibly their strongest side of the campaign. Let the games begin...

After only 3 minutes Shields came close to opening the scoring. Scroggins leaped to meet a penetrating cross but didn't managed to connect with his head and Bishop in the Tow Law goal palmed the ball away. If Scroggs had just been an inch taller...

Six minutes later and Shields were at it again. Armstrong had struck a decent drive but Bishop once more palmed the ball away. The ball then fell to Hal Graham who saw his effort saved. From the resulting corner Davey Graham climbed highest but his header flew over the bar.

In the 13th minute it was a case of déjà vu for the home side. Armstrong whipped in another good cross and once again Scroggins couldn't quite get his nut on the end of it and the keeper collected the ball. Perhaps an Amy Winehouse style hairdo is the answer...

"So who wants pie and chips?"

The game then fell in to a bit of a lull from the point of view of goalmouth activity. Both sides were losing possession and direction when they attacked the final third of the pitch. Shields were still looking the better of the two sides throughout this passage of play but a goal from either side was looking unlikely.

It was the 36th minute before Shields put another decent cross in to the box. Unfortunately Stephenson couldn't get on to the end of it as it beat him and his marker before being scooped up by the Tow Law keeper.

Four minutes before half time, Hal Graham climbed to get his head on to the end of another decent cross. He connected well but couldn't keep it down and the ball cleared the crossbar. Shields were now starting to look a little more menacing when they were in and around the visitors penalty area.

Two minutes later and Chris Feasey tried his best to open the scoring. Letting rip from 25 yards his ball skimmed a Tow Law defender before skimming the outside of the right hand post for a corner. The crowd were starting to sense that Shields could get themselves in front.

In the 44th minute Tow Law's Gott pulled his boot back to crack one from the edge of the 18 yard box. His shot, whilst powerful, was also high and wide of the target. As the game moved in to first half stoppage time Shields got the breakthrough they had deserved. Another good delivery in to the box saw Hal Graham trying to get his head to the ball to send it towards the goal. The ball eventually fell to the feet of Tony Stephenson. From about 12 yards out he steadied himself and fired a shot with power in to the back of the net. Bishop in the Tow Law goal could do nothing about it. A great strike from a player who is starting to show the Shields fans exactly what he can do. Soon after the restart the referee blew for half time. South Shields 1 Tow Law Town 0.

The second half started with Shields on the attack again. Firstly Chris Feasey saw his effort go the wrong side of the upright. then Armstrong fought off a couple of Tow Law players with great determination before playing a lovely ball in to Ramsey in the box. Ramsey scuffed his shot which rolled wide of the goal.

With 56 minutes on the clock the visitors started to fight back. Tow Law had been awarded a free kick about 25 yards from the Shields goal. Their free kick was well struck as it looped over the wall and dipped as it headed in to the arms of Clark. However, he fumbled the catch but managed to make amends and reclaimed the ball without any damage done.

Three minutes later Marc Eccles, The Lawyers number 11, ended up with far too much time on the ball. The defence seemed reluctant to close him down and force him back. He ended up firing a shot towards Clark. The shot was tame and was comfortably collected by Clarky. This was a warning shot to the Shields back line to keep focused and to prevent Tow Law from having time on the ball. The defence had looked quite assured throughout the game and with Shields holding a slender lead there was little room for error.

There had been 62 minutes played when Tow Low pulled level. Craig Gott lashed home a cracking strike from at least 20 yards. Clark could not get anywhere near it. Whilst it was a brilliant taken effort from Gott, Shields have to hold their hands up and accept that they allowed the Tow Law No.8 far too much time on the ball. He wasn't closed down or challenged which allowed him the time and space to fire a shot in towards goal. 1-1.

Shields tried to respond immediately. Tony Stephenson tried to wrap his foot around a ball played in to the area but couldn't get over the top of it and his effort went high over the bar. A minute later Armstrong got in on the act. He travelled well, fending off a couple of challenges before firing a shot from 20 yards. Bishop got his fingertips to it and did enough to get it over the bar for a corner. From the corner Stephenson found himself on the end of the delivery but fired his header straight at the keeper.

In the 71st minute Clark was called in to action in the Shields goal. A shot came in from a tight angle which saw him throw himself down at the near post to prevent the visitors from taking the lead.

With 73 minutes gone Shields made their first substitution. Ramsey went off and Jonny Wightman took to the pitch. A couple of minutes later Stephenson was replaced by Tony Coe. The introduction of these two helped to refresh the side and push for a winner.

With twelve minutes remaining Wightman headed a ball down towards Armstrong. He turned and shot but saw his effort collected by the Tow Law keeper. Soon after this effort, another substitution saw Chris Feasey make way for Craig Ellison. And within seconds "Sid" was making himself known to the Tow Law midfield.

With just seven minutes left to play, Shields got themselves back in front. A cross in to the box had seen chaos break out as the ball bobbled about. Captain Scroggs was thankfully on hand to stick his foot out and poke the ball in to the back of the net. He wheeled away in delight as the crowd let out an almighty cheer.

With three minutes left Tow Law had a long range effort at goal. Again it was Gott who let loose and saw his 35 yard attempt go just wide of the right hand post. From the resulting goal kick, Jonny Wightman saw a powerful shot beat the keeper for pace. Unfortunately the left hand upright came to Tow Law's rescue. The ball ricocheted back in to the box but the visitors managed to clear their lines.

Rodenby had another assured game after returning from injury

After several minutes of injury time the referee finally blew for the end of the game. South Shields had ran out 2-1 winners. It was a deserved result which saw The Mariners record back-to-back victories. Tow Law were certainly a big physical unit. However they rarely looked like taking anything from the game and seemed to become frustrated quite easily. Former Shields target Alex Benjamin didn't get much change out of Oates and Paxton and drifted out of the game.

So after seven games South Shields have amassed 12 points. I looked through the archives to make a comparison with last season. Shields collected their twelfth point after 18 league games. This came with a 2-2 draw away to Bishop Auckland on the 30th December. Therefore I think I can safely say that the team is improving. With two tricky away ties to follow it is good to know that there are already some points in the bank. Next stop... Kingsley Park, Ryton.

A trip down the A19 to the Rowneys Ltd Arena was the order of the day on Saturday to take on Billingham Town. Shields were coming in to this match on the back of three consecutive league defeats. With a depleted side, this was never going to be easy. However, belief was still strong that things would improve.

On a very blustery day the referee blew his whistle and we were underway. First blood went to Billingham. Two minutes in to the game Jonathon French struck one towards the Shields goal but his tame shot was easily picked up by Clark.

In the sixth minute Shields had their first meaningful attempt at goal. Ramsey combined well with Armstrong but the shot was scuffed just wide of the right hand post. Four minutes later we saw the first goal of the game. A lovely cross field ball was picked up by Stephenson. He controlled it well and started to close in on goal. He made good use of the keeper's indecision to come out by stroking the ball past his outstretched left hand and the ball came to rest in the bottom right hand corner of the net. A whole three minutes had passed when Shields got their second. Ramsey out jumped the Billingham defence and directed a powerful header towards the goal. His effort hit against the post and rolled along the goal line before crossing it despite the efforts by the Billingham defence to scoop it clear. 2-0 up and the travelling fans were loving it.

From the resulting restart Billingham moved forward. A defensive lapse by Oates let in Billingham but the final shot by Clarke went in to the side netting. This was a useful reminder to the Shields team to keep focused and not to let their good work be undone.

Fifteen minutes in to the first half and Shields should have made it three. A cracking cross from Davey Graham so chaos break out in the Billingham area. The keeper didn't collect the ball and it was left to Armstrong & Stephenson to try and stab the ball home. A mixture of the ball bobbling, indecision and time led to the ball being put out of play instead of in the back of the net. Oh if only one of the two hadn't been in the way it would have been a goal for sure!

Two minutes later and Shields were knocking at the door again. Ramsey struck one towards the goal. His shot was on target but was blocked by a defender. The rebound fell to Chris Feasey who tried his luck. His shot was well struck but Moody in the Billingham goal pushed it around his right hand post. From the corner that followed, Ramsey again went close to doubling his tally with a header that went wide of the left hand upright. Shields were becoming quite rampant and the certainly had the home side on the back foot. Shields were playing with the wind (probably a dodgy kebab) and they were making the most of it.

A rare foray in to the Shields half by Billingham brought a save from Clark. He parried the shot away and the ball fell to Davey Graham who cleared the danger.

Half way through the first half Shields were trying to put more pressure on Josh Moody. Feasey, who looked in good form throughout the game, whipped in a cross. Stephenson managed to get himself on the end of it but saw his effort saved as the keeper dived low to his right.

A few minutes later and Shields were at it again. Another great pass picked out Armstrong. Once in the area he clinically dispatched the ball in to the bottom right hand corner of the net. Moody had been beaten for a third time and the Mariners fans behind the goal were going absolutely crazy! Several chants were to be heard echoing around the ground as the Shields contingent savoured the fantastic feeling of leading by three goals away from home. Surely this would be over as a contest, wouldn't it? Then again...

The Billingham player tries to show a new type of ball control

Soon after the third Shields goal, Billingham tried to make a fist of it. With nothing to lose they created two good chances within two minutes. The first one fell to Michael Emmerson. Showing some good control and nifty footwork, he created a space for himself but pulled his shot across the face of the goal. Thankfully for Shields there wasn't anyone following up for the home side and the ball rolled wide of the post.

The following effort was by Emmerson again. Once more he jinked around and fired in a shot only to see it deflected by Davey Graham. Billingham shouted for handball and perhaps on a different day they may have got it, although it would have been a harsh decision. But as they cheesy old saying goes, we have all seen them given for less!

This gave Shields a jolt and with ten minutes on the clock before half-time they almost added another. Stephenson, who was looking sharp and full of running, hit a well struck header against the post. The ball fell back in to the area but the follow up attempt was screwed wide of the left hand post.

With four minutes left of the first half the Mariners tried again to get a fourth. Henderson, who provided some great passes throughout the match, let loose a shot-cum-cross in to the Billingham area. Stephenson chased the ball to try and direct it in to the net but was impeded. The referee waved play on and the ball ran wide of the post. It was a fair shout for a penalty but certainly not the the type that is always given.

The first half ended with South Shields three goals to the good, a clean sheet and all eleven players still on the pitch. Happy days! Shields deserved their lead. A mixture of good creative passing, lots of application and some good tackling had left Billingham looking pretty battered and lacking belief. Shields would be playing in to the wind for the second half. Although this would make life more difficult, surely nothing could go wrong? Being three goals up should be enough to guarantee three points... or would it?

No sooner had the second half started, Billingham had clawed a goal back. Shields failed to clear their lines and Stewart put the ball past Clark to make it Billingham Town 1 South Shields 3.

On 51 minutes, Bath struck one from distance which cleared the right hand corner of the Shields goal. Billingham were finding life a little easier with the wind behind them and were pushing for a second. Shields were still looking like winning, but the the curse of the referee started all over again. It was the Consett game all over again.

Rodenby beats four players to the ball

On 53 minutes the referee awarded a free-kick halfway up the pitch. He called Hal Graham over. Nobody had seemed to do much wrong in the challenge. Hopefully this would be just a quiet word. No chance. The red card, which was a straight red and not a second bookable offence, was out of the pocket and a bemused looking Graham left the pitch. The referee gesticulated it was for the use of an elbow. A number of people were baffled by this decision, including a few Billingham fans!

Shields battled on with ten men. They were still making chances and looking good value for their lead. Just before the hour mark, Stephenson raced towards the Billingham goal. He was brought down from behind by his marker who took his legs from under him. No penalty. Stephenson got up and tried to recover the ball. This time Moody came out of his goal and brought Stephenson down with his arms. No penalty. Even if you excuse the two officials (ref and assistant ref) of being unsighted for the first foul, surely one of them saw the second foul. Apparently not. Should have gone to Specsavers. An innocuous challenge gets a red card. Two fouls don't get awarded a penalty. Go figure. :os

The foul that wasn't a foul (but it was really)

The first foul that wasn't a foul (if you are a referee) left Stephenson on the ground in discomfort. Obviously not from the clattering he received as that wasn't a foul. He received some treatment before hobbling off for further treatment. He did come back on but was obviously moving very gingerly. Fair play to him, at least he tried to see if he could run it off first.

In the 63rd minute Billingham applied some pressure. It took a great block from Oates and a good save from Clark from the rebound to keep the two goal lead. Then another moment of madness.

Nifty footwork leaves the defender upside down

Ramsey received his second dismissal in as many games. Again this was a straight red. It appears it was for kicking out at an opponent, although this didn't appear obvious. To give credit where it is due, the Billingham player involved in the incident seemed to be appealing to the ref NOT to send Ramma off. In the age of players brandishing imaginary cards to put pressure on referees, it was good to see some genuine sportsmansip at play. Ramsey is now looking at a four match ban.

A few minutes later and Stephenson had to give up and come off the pitch. He had performed well for Shields and looks as if he could prove to be a useful acquisition.

Maughan with a shot on goal

With approximately 15 minutes left to play, Richard Maughan found himself on the end of a cross just inside the Billingham penalty box. His shot was on target but was cleared off the line. Only having nine men on the pitch seemed to make Shields even more determined to take all three points.

A few moments later and Billingham nearly reduced the deficit further. Anthony Abel was clean through on goal with just Clark to beat. Clark stayed upright and spread himself as wide as possible. Abel shot but Clark saved with his feet. Not the first good save Clark had made in the match.

A minute later and it was 2-3. Shaun Clarke let rip with an absolute ripsnorter of a shot. Clark dived and managed to get his hands to it but could only help direct it in to the top right hand corner of the goal. It was a brilliant strike and certainly worthy of a goal. It was going to be a tense end to the game.

The next few minutes saw nine man Shields create several chances. Robson showed good skill as he dribbled in to teh area only for his shot to be headed clear. Moments later Feasey put in a great cross but Shields had nobody in the box to steer it towards goal. Feasey was involved again with a header but he couldn't get any power on it and it limped wide of the post.

The ball went back up to the other end where Billingham had a shot cleared off the line. This was exciting stuff folks! Billingham sent a free-kick over the bar a minute later. The Shields fans were looking a tad nervous.

Then the referee decided to make another odd decision. This time he gave Shaun Clarke his marching orders with yet another straight red card. Once again it seemd like a bizarre decision which left both sets of fans confused. There wasn't anything obvious that had warranted his dismissal, although he had clattered Maughan earlier in the half without punishment.

With two minutes left on the clock Shields added a fourth and put the game to bed. A shot by Wightman had been spilled by the Billingham keeper and Craig Armstrong was on hand to calmly place it in to the net. The Shields fans were in jubilant mood and rightly so.

The epitamy of happiness and relief!

When the whistle blew for the end of the game there was a mixture of joy and relief, and possibly a sprinkling of frustration, amongst the Shields supporters. Many gathered near the players tunnel to give the lads a most deserved round of applause as they left the pitch. Losing two players only seemed to bring them closer together as a unit.

Thankfully Monday's game at Horden CW was called off due to an FA Cup replay. With another injury to add to the current problems a match only 48 hours after this hard fought win is something we could have done without. Hopefully by the time managerless Tow Law Town arrive on Saturday we will have one or two more players fit and well. Nine points from six games, tenth in the table... a marked improvement on last season's efforts. Keep it going lads... UP THE MARINERS!

Filtrona Park played host to Consett on a fairly pleasant evening hoping to stop the recent run of defeats. Would the Steelmen be on the receiving end tonight? With Shields still having a number of injuries and suspensions, it was always going to be a tough game to win.

The first twenty minutes of play were pretty forgettable. The play by both sides was rather scrappy and the match certainly wasn't flowing. Passes were going astray and neither keeper was involved in any meaningful action.

Stephenson sees his shot screw wide of the post

The first real effort came form Consett's Gary Ormston. He got his head on to a decent cross only to see his effort clear the crossbar. The play then went fairly quiet again until the half hour mark. Tony Stephenson had been played in by Scroggins only to see his shot pulled wide of the post. From this Consett played the ball back towards the Shields goal. A sloppy pass from Craig Ellison allowed Consett's David Pounder to pounce. He took the ball and fired a low shot from about 25 yards in to the bottom right of Anderson's goal. The young keeper may have seen the ball late due to being unsighted and didn't get near the shot from Pounder. South Shields 0 Consett 1.

Five minutes after the goal saw Shields lose Scroggins to injury. Once again our influential midfielder was lost and the team needed to regroup. Michael Rodenby came on in his place. One injured player returns to the fray at the expense of an injured player. Did somebody break a mirror at Filtona?? Here's hoping that Scroggs isn't going to be missing for too long. Consett came close to a second goal a few minutes later. Craig Tate, formerly of Shields, was played in by Carl Piecha but fired his effort straight down the throat of Anderson.

Careful Ramma... you'll get booked if you stand too close!

A couple of minutes later saw Ramsey received a yellow card. I must be honest and say that I have absolutely no idea what the offence was. I was sighted but didn't see anything problematic. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Half time came and as the crowd disappeared for a swift bevvy or for a balti pie or three, Shields were left a goal down and wondering where the fighting spirit had gone. The curse of the first half for Shields was their inability to put together a series of simple, crisp passes and a lack of cohesion as a unit. To be fair to Consett, they deserved to their lead. They weren't spectacular, or even quite good, but they had played better than Shields and that was sufficient.

Before a ball was kicked in the second half, Andy Clark was brought on for Chris Anderson. Shields started the half in better spirits. The passing was improving, the fight was starting to show and the crowd were starting to believe an equaliser was a possibility.

Armstrong gets dispossessed

Nine minutes after the restart Ramsey got his head to one only for it to fly past the left post. His excitement for the evening was still to come. Just after the hour, Clark put on his Bruce Grobbelaar hat and went for a wander. In an effort to help his defence, he came out of his area and ended up taking a tour of the final third of the pitch. It was entertaining, if not a little nerve wrecking!

Shields were seeing a lot of the ball but were finding it difficult to make it pay at the business end of the pitch. Plenty of effort but lacking that cutting edge. Then the game went a little weird. A long stoppage in play was caused by a tangle between Ramma and Piecha. Ramma had taken a blow to the face from the Consett man, yet the referee (after consultation with his assistant) gave them both a ticking off. It seemed as if Ramsey was the innocent party to everyone except the officials. No sooner had the game restarted when Ramsey got his second yellow and his marching orders. He was involved in nothing more than a tangle of legs with a Consett defender. No foul play, no vicious tackle... just a tangle of legs. The red card appeared from the ref's pocket like greased lightning and Ramsey cut a disconsolate figure as he headed for an early bath. Shields were finding it hard to get past the Consett back line already, now they had to do it with 10 men.

A couple of minutes later, Chris Feasey played a lovely ball across the area, however there was nobody there to steer it home. The Shields number 11 had spent a lot of the first 45 minutes camped in his own half but found a lot more of the ball in attacking areas in the second half. No sooner had Shields seen a chance go begging, Consett broke upfield. Thankfully Hal Graham was on hand to head clear off the line after Clark had been beaten. With 15 minutes left to play at least a one-nil deficit could be overturned by 10-man Shields. 2-0 would have been game over.

Ellison picked up a yellow card soon after and Davey Graham saw a powerful strike comfortably clear the upright. The game was becoming very stretched and Clark had to come out of his area to clear up the danger with eight minutes left on the clock.

As the game headed towards the final whistle, Ellison received his marching orders for a second bookable offence. The first booking was a harsh decision, but the second was fair after he retaliated after a challenge. He seemed to kick out, probably out of sheer frustration, but the referee had to give him his marching orders. I could start ranting and raving, but I will simply say that the referee didn't have one of his better days.

Injury time saw the last meaningful attack of the game. Consett sub Kevin Davison was clear on goal with only Clark to beat. Clark stayed on his feet, making the goal seem as small as possible. Davison struck the ball well but was off target and his effort went wide of Clark's right hand post. Just as well as a 2-0 defeat would have been a poor reflection of the game.

South Shields now have two suspensions pending to go with their injury worries. Coe will miss Saturday's match but will be available for Monday's game at Horden CW. Wightman is hopeful of playing in a couple of weeks as he recovers from his rib injury. Mr Steadman will continue to reshuffle his depleted pack for Saturday's game at Billingham Town. It is hard to make a winning hand when half the deck is missing...

SOUTH Shields are making sure their fans are in the know when it comes to life in the Northern League.

The Division One side has a big following, and now the South Shields Supporters' Association has produced a special Northern League guide.Priced at £2.50 – the 52-page booklet includes a run-down of all Northern League clubs, a history of South Shields and key contacts for the Mariners.

The supporters' association has also produced two calendars for the 2009/10 campaign – one with the season's fixtures and one with a selection of colour photographs. These are priced at £1.50 per set of two.Both the calendars and the guide are available from the club shop (matchdays only), the Central Library in South Shields, the Furniture Den on Stanhope Road, Boldon Lane corner, or from John Prendergast on 0191 4546850 or Bob Scott on 07920 554377.

The supporters' association is also calling on other fans to get on board.So far the Mariners have an official membership of more than 200 fans, and now they are looking to build on that.The Mariners have gone from strength to strength since being threatened with going to the wall in 2006, but the current committee are aware of the dangers of resting on their laurels.And with that in mind the supporters' association is hoping to attract even more new members.Anyone interested in joining up can contact John on the above number.

Our first away match of the campaign saw us travel to West Allotment Celtic. It would undoubtedly be a hard game. Shields were coming in off the back of two league wins out of two. So were West Allotment. They hadn't conceded a goal in either of those games and both were away from home. On top of that, we hadn't beaten Celtic in competitive action for quite a while. Let the games begin...

After only two minutes Shields had their first sniff of goal. Davey Graham let loose a drive from outside of the area which skidded just wide of the post. Just the start Shields would have been hoping for.

Clark called in to early action

Four minutes later West Allotment went very close to opening the scoring. John Campbell lobbed one towards the goal which beat Clark in the Shields goal. thankfully the crossbar came to the rescue as the ball bounced across the top of it. Phew... close but no cigar for West Allotment.

Only a minute later West Allotment sizzled one across the six yard box but there was nobody running in to get on the end of it. Shields needed to get themselves back in to the game. They did this immediately after the West Allotment attack. the ball was sent upfield and Scroggs ran in to the box and dispatched the ball past Hunter in the Celtic goal. The keeper had dived to his left but couldn't stop the shot. 1-0 to Shields and things were looking good.

Shields upped the tempo after the goal. On 10 minutes Ramsey cut back in on his right foot and launched one just wide of the left hand post from about 20 yards. Shields were looking comfortable and Celtic were starting to become pushed back.

After 18 minutes South Shields came close again, this time Hunter in the home goal palmed a free kick around his right hand post. Shields were hunting for a second goal. From the resulting corner, the ball fell to Davey Graham who let rip once again but saw his shot go just outside the top right hand side of the goal.

Then came what I feel was the turning point in the game. Scroggs had to leave the field of play after about 25 minutes. He was holding his groin. The rumour along the touchline was that he felt a twinge and that he came off before he did any further damage. Let's hope he is fit for Saturday. James Parkinson came on in his place.

Scroggs threw the captain's armband to Davey Graham. It was after Scroggins went off that Shields seemed to implode. The lads were still the better team for the next five minutes or so, but then West Allotment asserted themselves.

On 32 mins Ramsey thumped the ball towards the goal from 25 yards. A cracking effort that went just wide of the bottom right of the post. This was to be Shields last meaningful attack of the half as West Allotment turned the tide. No sooner had Ramsey gone close, Celtic stormed up the other end of the pitch. They were allowed too much time on the ball and Paul Gardiner made them pay by stroking the ball home on 33 mins. 1-1.

Parkinson fights for possession

As the half-time whistle approached Shields conceded another, just like they did against Benfield two days earlier. Davey Graham knocked one of their players flying off the pitch which resulted in a free kick being awarded. From the resulting free kick the ball was played in to the Shields 18 yard box where John Campbell found time to stab the ball home and give West Allotment a 2-1 half time lead.

As the second half got underway there was a hope that Shields were going to pull themselves back in to the game. After only a minute Davey Graham tried his luck again with another long range effort which went just wide of the top right again. Three minutes later Hal Graham got his head to a cross which he sent looping towards the goal from 18 yards out only to see it clear the top of the crossbar. Would we see an equaliser?

Feasey & Fitzy double-team to try and win the ball

From this point on, west Allotment got back in control of the game. Campbell had a great chance to make it three when he went one-on-one with Clarky. Clark stayed big but Campbell's shot was awful. He sent it high, wide and not very handsome! Unfortunately, their finishing improved.

Three minutes after missing a sitter, Celtic were awarded a free kick just outside of the area. Mark Rasmussen stepped up to take it. He sent a beautifully struck free kick sailing past Clark in to the top right hand corner of the net. A lovely finish which saw Celtic go 3-1 up with 34 minutes to play. It was gonna be hard for Shields to get back in to this.

Two minutes later and Clark was back in action. A long range shot was rifled in which he managed to tip over the bar to keep Shields in the game. If only he could have made a similar save later...

On 61 minutes Shields got forward. Ramsey, with little options to use in support, turned and cracked a shot from about 20 yards out. Unfortunately for Ramma it was nearer to the corner flag than the goal as the ball just ran away from him as he tried to strike it.

But this was a trend for Shields. Too many shots were long range efforts as they either weren't getting in to the box or there wasn't enough support for the man on the ball.

Another two minutes passed which saw Hal Graham go in to the referee's notebook for a late challenge. From my position it seemed a fair booking.Soon after the booking West Allotment were awarded a free kick some 40+ yards from goal, not far from the left hand touchline. Campbell launched the ball towards the crowd of players in the box. It cleared the players... but unfortunately also somehow managed to clear Clark and sailed in to the back of the net. Everyone looked stunned, not least Campbell and Clark. Campbell was stunned he scored, Clark stunned that he'd been beaten from such a distance. 1-4.

The game continued to see Celtic dominate. On 66 mins Thompson sent one just wide of the post. With twenty minutes left Shields brought on Maughan for Tye. Davey Graham was dispatched up front as a makeshift centre forward.

With fifteen minutes to go Clark was called upon to make two good saves. West Allotment's Thompson struck one at point blank range which Clark stood up to and cleared the ball away. The ball was played back to Thompson who tried again from the edge of the area only for Clark to save the follow up shot. Shields were hanging on a little bit.

On 78 minutes Ramsey received a yellow card. I wish I could tell you why but it was a mystery to me... and to Ramma!

Hal Graham has springs in his boots!

Just after the booking Shields made their final substitution. Anthony Robson came on for Chris Feasey. Five minutes later West Allotment banged in their fifth goal courtesy of Ian Dunn. Fitzy came agonizingly close to a consolation goal with two minutes to play. After some good work he broke free and sent the ball past the keeper and towards the goal. It hit the bottom of the right hand upright and rolled across the goal line. Unfortunately there was nobody there to follow it up and the home side cleared their lines.

The full time whistle went to bring this game to a close. West Allotment were worthy winners. They looked like a team that could cause a few problems this season. They have scored ten and let in only one goal in three games. Not bad at all.

Shields however have some thinking to do. The back four didn't look comfortable. Once Scroggs went off injured the midfield lost its way. Too many passes were being picked off. There wasn't enough penetration in the opposition's 18 yard box. It almost looked as if panic had set in during some parts of the second half. Yet we looked so good against Shildon and Chester-le-Street.

Personally I thought Hal Graham played well, Ramma never stopped trying, Feasey tried to take on the full back when he was given the ball, Fitzy scrapped the best he could in an over-run midfield. No doubt this performance has given the management a cause for long, deep and painful reflection.

As I said to someone at the full-time whistle; "Who'd be a football manager??"

FA Cup? Childhood dreams? Isn't it? Jumpers for goalposts...

After two good home wins hopes were high for a good start to this seasons FA Cup campaign. Newcastle Benfield were last year's League Champions so everyone knew it would be a tough game. However, Benfield had just been thrashed 5-0 in their previous game... could Shields do something similar?

Oates heads clear

Both teams started quite brightly with perhaps Benfield just edging the opening gambits. It took 10 minutes for Benfield to take the upper hand. The first of a number of defensive lapses saw them break in to the box. Adam Scope let rip a shot which looped off the leg of Fitzy and spiralled over Clark in to the back of the net. Unlucky? Perhaps.

Fitzy keeps the pressure on

It took just a further eight minutes for Benfield to double their lead. The ball was whipped in to the box. Clark made the decision to dive at the ball. The result was he parried the ball straight in to the path of Dean Nicholson who stroked it home. Less than a quarter of the game played and Shields were already firmly on the back foot. 0-2.

Shields were struggling as a team. The defensive unit were at sixes and sevens with each other. The usual support from the full-backs up the wing wasn't happening, possibly due to the concern of being caught on the break. The midfield were not as dogged and controlled as they were in the opening two games. The front men were getting little in the way of service. Passes were going astray far too often. Too many long balls were being launched. Benfield had their tails up. The Tango men were giving us a bit of a slapping.

A crunching tackle

With about ten minutes of the first half remaining Benfield were awarded a penalty. Paul Antony stepped up and booted it straight past Clarky to give Benfield a healthy 3-0 lead. The Shields lads looked stunned but to be fair it was no more than Benfield had deserved.

The visitors pretty much wrapped up the game with a fourth just before half-time. A Shields attack was broken up and the men in orange broke up the pitch. Oates made the wrong choice when he headed the ball straight in to the path of Young who dispatched it to send the Shields fans scrambling to the refreshments stall to find some solace in a mince pie.

The second half was the complete antithesis of the first. Shields came out with a bit of fire in their belly. With only two minutes on the clock Tony Coe got on the end of a cross cum shot that had taken a deflection and put the ball past Grainger in the Benfield goal. 1-4. Was this gonna be a comeback of biblical proportions?

Well... no. However it wasn't from the want of trying. Shields had the bit between the teeth and they pressed forward looking for a second. The referee very kindly waved away a penalty appeal after Coe was clearly brought down in the area. Even Stevie Wonder shouted "penalty!". But once again we were the victim of some random officiating.

Scroggs managed to pick up another yellow card on the hour. Again it seemed a strange decision. Both teams had committed worse fouls throughout the game without receiving a card. Oh to be a referee!

Not long after his booking Scroggs should have been awarded a penalty. After stealing the ball from their keeper, Grainger essentially jumped on his back. Somehow nothing was given. From where I was standing at the time, the referee may have been partially unsighted... but his assistant wasn't. Hmmmm......

Feasey followed Scroggs in to the referee's notebook as Shields fought for the cause. The back four were communicating better, the midfield found their spark, the ball was being played along the ground much to the pleasure of the two front men. The first half saw too many long balls, the second half saw some more positive and crisp passing. Shields were playing it on the deck and the visitors found this harder to cope with. Their back four were big. They dealt with the aerial stuff quite easily but they were not as mobile on the ground.

Henderson and Parkinson were brought on with twenty and fifteen minutes to go respectively. Although Shields continued to attack the clock was against them. By now Benfield had pulled down the shutters and turned ultra-defensive. The clocked ticked down and Newcastle Benfield took their place in the next round of the FA Cup.

Shields can take some heart from their second half performance. They can also take some areas of improvement with them too. Defensive lapses were a problem last season, although the first two league games have seen them more cohesive. Hopefully the first 45 minutes were just a really bad hiccup. We need our guys to be more John Terry and less Fabricio Collicini. Also the lack of attacking options is another area to conquer. Tony Coe is now out for four games, Wightman isn't back for another couple of weeks. I am certain Studs and Justin are looking at options and tracking players. However, you can only sign those who are available and those who we can afford. Mark Viduka is out of contract... ;o)

Following our win on the first day of the new season, South Shields were back in action against Shildon. Their opening game saw them play out a 2-2 draw at home to Billingham Synthonia. Shildon finished 8^th last season so we were expecting a tough game.

On a breezy evening both sides took to the field of battle. Shildon looked like a big outfit with plenty of physical strength.

Within four minutes South Shields found themselves a goal to the good. They had started lively with a couple of early attacks before Tony Coe surged in to the area only to be brought down. The ref quickly pointed to the spot. Penalty! Scroggins placed the ball on the spot, ran up and calmly places it low to the keeper’s right. 1-0 and a dream start.

A few minutes later there was a long delay as Keith Finch, the Shildon keeper, received treatment for what appeared to be a dislocated finger. During the delay, Chris Feasey showed a couple of his team-mates his dance floor prowess with an impromptu rendition of YMCA :o)

After the long delay the game restarted but was a little scrappy until both sides settled, with Shields taking the upper hand. Another slight delay then occurred as Oates took a smack to the face which drew blood. There was a little concern that he may need to come off for stitches but thankfully this wasn’t necessary. Scroggs then picked up a yellow card for a “nothing” challenge. Perplexed he argued his case but it fell on deaf ears. The pressure continued to be applied as Shildon started to get trapped in their own half. It was from this period of pressure Shields scored their second. Following a lovely long pass from Fitzy it was left to young Mr Ramsey to stick the ball in to the net. A well deserved goal for both player and team.

With about fifteen minutes to play Shildon scored with a sucker punch. They sprung a break from their own half after more Shields pressure and Warren Byrne calmly slotted the ball past Clark in the Shields goal. It was one of only a couple of chances Shildon had throughout the first half.

A long first half finally drew to a close with South Shields leading 2-1. Shields looked good value for their lead and the fans hoped that lead would grow in the second half.

Shildon started the second half in a positive way and started to push Shields back. For all they were getting a lot of possession they weren’t making many clear cut chances to pull themselves level. As they had in the first 45 minutes they continued their physical approach to the game, showing they were more than prepared to fight for the cause. The Shields defensive unit stayed solid with good support from the rest of the team. We looked like a team of battlers who weren’t going to give up their lead without a scrap.

The Mariners then did to Shildon what they had done to us in the first half. As the hour-mark approached Shields broke up the pitch and closed in on the visiting team’s goal. Some lovely work by Coe set Ramma up on the edge of the area to thump his second goal of the game in to the bottom left hand side of the net. 3-1. The fans were bouncing and Ramma looked a very happy chap!

As the breeze picked up, Shildon kept trying to create an opening but Shields stood firm. As they started to run out of ideas Shields continued to turn the screw. With just under a quarter of an hour to go Shields put the game beyond reach with a fourth. Another break set Tony Coe free. He kept calm as he took the ball around Finch and stroked the ball in to the open goal. As Coe celebrated his thoroughly deserved goal the fans behind the Shildon goal increased the noise and joined in with the festivities.

Tony Coe was many people’s Man of the Match with one goal and two assists… not to mention his endless running, dogged determination and commitment to the team. Gavin who??

With a couple of minutes left on the clock, and the Mariners sailing to a 4-1 victory, both Tony Coe and Chris Feasey made way for Phil Leonard and James Parkinson. Both men left the pitch to warm applause which befitted their performances.

As the players left the pitch they were greeted with a huge round of applause from the Shields fans. This was an excellent performance which produced a great result. The team is looking confident and the fans are showing their support in decent numbers. Another good crowd of what appeared to be well over 100 spurned the England game to watch good quality football played with pride and determination. Here’s hoping for another bumper crowd this Saturday when we take on Newcastle Benfield in the FA Cup Preliminary Round.

On a night where many people stayed up late to watch shooting stars make an appearance in the night sky, those of us who were at Filtrona Park had already seen some. And it was a very pretty sight!

Sun is shining, weather is sweet. What a lovely day to start a campaign in the Northern League First Division.

Spurred on from a pretty successful pre-season which culminated in retaining the Sam Bartram Memorial Trophy, South Shields took on Chester-le-Street in confident mood.

Before the match got underway there was one minutes applause in honour of the late Sir Bobby Robson. Plenty of noise was made from the crowd, players and officials. I can almost imagine Sir Bobby sitting in his heavenly dug out saying "That's all well and good but there's a match to be played!" such was his love of the game.

The crowd was a decent size for the game. I had certainly counted well over 100+ at about 2.50pm. Apparently the attendance was nearer the 200 mark. Marvellous stuff!! Here's hoping for a whole season of big ones (ooer missus, fanrr fanrr)!

From the off both sides were pretty well matched. In fact it was Chester-le-Street who nearly took the lead early on. Was it not for a fine save from Clark immediately followed by the goal not being two inches taller they would have stolen an early lead. The ball had bounced in front of the goal and just crept over the crossbar. This early scare however was a blessing.

From that point Shields began to settle and make more of their possession. A mixture of short stuff and some searching balls started to place Chester-le-Street under pressure. Coe, like his name sake, ran all over the park looking for spaces and making himself available for the pass. Fitzy and Scroggs battled for evrything in the centre of the park. The two wingers made regular forays down each flank.

One of the reasons why they were allowed so much freedom to push forward was down to some good defending at the back. Oates let very little past, Hal & Davey Graham provided extra help out wide to the midfield and Paxton made a few cracking long passes in to dangerous areas.

Shields saw two penalty claims turned down, one of which was a harsh decision. It is fair to say that the referee didn't have his finest hour at Filtrona Park!

Despite some good work and a few half decent chances we went in at half-time at 0-0. Surely the second half would see a goal or two... wouldn't it?

The second half started pretty much where the first half ended. Shields applying pressure but not getting the breakthrough they deserved. This wasn't helped by an incorrect offside call from the Assistant Referee as Coe broke through to stick the ball in the onion bag. The same Ass. Ref also pulled a remarkable stunt. After one of his decisions Davey G was a tad annoyed and questioned his decision. The Ass. Ref called the Referee over and told him to "show a card to South Shields number 3. His attitude stinks". I always thought it was the Referee's decision who to book etc. but apparently not anymore. Oh and the fact that prior to that two Chester players had done and said the same thing to the Ass. Ref but without punishment also added to the confusion somewhat. I digress...

Coe never stopped chasing all game. His performance deserved a goal.

Eventually Shields got their goal. Scroggs picked up the ball in front of the area and sent it straight in to the bottom right of the Chester-le-Street goal. Their keeper stood no chance with the clinical finish. At last Shields had their deserved lead and Scroggs ran off in celebration... and no doubt a little relief. It would have been harsh not to have grabbed a goal after all the hard work.

As we approached the last fifteen minutes of the game, the gaffer brought on Chris Feasey in place of Craig Armstong. Feasey was immediately involved in the thick of things. He popped up here and there and everywhere! He came so close to adding a well deserved second goal after the ball had been whipped in to the box. Feasey stuck out his leg only to see the ball painstakingly skid past his boot from about eight yards out. If his studs had been about 2mm longer it would have been two-nil.

As the game drew to a close Shields continued to keep possession and made the opposition chase the game. Both teams started to look a little tired as they entered the last five minutes of the game. The heat certainly would not have helped their cause. With only a couple of minutes left on the clock, Ellison was replaced by James Parkinson. Ellison had put in a good shift and will no doubt be a thorn in a few teams sides this season.
When the final whistle blew the fans went away happy in the knowledge that we had started the campaign positively with three points in the bag, a good team performance and a clean sheet thrown in to the bargain. Spirits will be high both on and off the pitch in anticipation of Wednesday's visitors to Filtrona Park, Shildon FC. Bring it on...

Boldon CA v South Shields - Sat 1st August 09

I would have liked to have started this entry with the South Shields line up. However, despite me taking a quick scribbled copy from Phil's sheet I seemed to have lost it! My guess is it is in Asda South Shields somewhere... possibly somewhere around the bread aisle. Oh well... I will endeavor to make sure it doesn't happen again.

So on to the match itself. Thankfully the rain that had plagued the area had decided to give it a rest and we had the occasional glimpse of something I am told is called the "sun".

From the off it was a bit frantic with both sides trying to take an early advantage. After a scrappy start the game settled and Boldon CA were taking the upper hand. They looked keen to have a go at a team from a higher level, not to mention the local pride at stake.

Young Anderson made a few good saves before Boldon finally broke the deadlock. To be fair it was a well taken effort and probably what Boldon deserved, even if Anderson didn't! The keeper played a blinder and made a number of crucial saves which will no doubt give his confidence a real boost.

Shields were given the chance to equal the score with a penalty. However a tame effort by Ellison was saved by the Boldon keeper. The opposition keeper made a string of fine saves throughout the match. I think many of the Shields fans were impressed by his ability.

Just before the interval, Phil Leonard broke free and converted his chance to bring the score level. It was a well taken effort which showed some poise and control. Half-time 1-1.

Shields improved throughout the second half. They seemed to have upped the urgency and this started to turn the game around. The lads started to take control and started to create chances. However, the Boldon keeper was becoming a bit of a pest and kept Boldon in the game.

Shields started to keep Boldon pressed back as they started to lose their shape, and perhaps run out of ideas. A goal mouth scramble saw Ramsey trying to poke the ball home but a mixture of good goalkeeping and frantic defending on the line saw the ball eventually cleared.

Eventually, and with only a few minutes remaining, David Graham let loose an absolute screamer which flew past the Boldon keeper, despite him getting his fingertips to it, and nestled in to the right hand side of the goal. Their defence had at last been breached. 2-1.

The game was put beyond Boldon with almost the last kick of the game. A cross in to the box was turned in to their own net when their defender tried to put it out of play. 3-1.

As soon as the match kicked off again the ref blew his whistle for full-time. Shields had defended their crown and took the Sam Bartram Trophy for another 12 months. Scroggs received the trophy to a chorus of cheers and applause from both sets of fans.

We now move to the start of the season on Saturday when we host Chester-le-Street. Bring it on!!

Five subs were used throughout the second half, but I was too busy with the camera (and getting wet) to make a note of who, what and when!

The evening may have been gloomy but the performance certainly wasn't. Maybe several of us who got covered by the contents of a passing seagull's bowel brought some extra luck?! To be fair Shields didn't need it. They showed the difference in class throughout the match and picked up a well deserved 3-0 win for their efforts.

Whickham never really applied a lot of meaningful pressure. This is surely due to the constant hustle and bustle the Shields lads applied when they didn't have the ball. The Whickham players were never allowed to settle.

All three goals were well taken efforts. Ellison rifled one in to the bottom right hand corner of the net from the edge of the area before Barton climbed above the keeper to head home a good second for Shields.

Ramsey calmly tucked away a third in the second half to wrap the match up nicley. As I mentioned, several players were brought on throughout the second half and this did upset the flow a little. However, the game was over at this point and it gave the management team an opportunity to look at a few other players.

A decent enough game which saw a few positives being taken from the overall team performance. Although Barton will be toasted as the hero of the piece with his two goals, it was a thoroughly well deserved win with the whole team fighting and working for each other.
